Friday, September 25 Around Newark, New Jersey: Jazz, a Film and Two Museums

Our calendar for September 25 through October 7 is front-loaded: everything listed so far lands on Friday, September 25, and most of it sits across the river in Manhattan. Here are six picks worth building the day around, starting with the one closest to home.

Paris, Texas (1984)

This is the only pick on our side of the Hudson. The Williams Center's Cinema Underground is screening the 1984 road movie, and a big screen is the right way to take in all that open desert. The late-afternoon start leaves the evening free for dinner in Rutherford afterward.

Birdland Big Band

A full big band in a club room is a different experience from a concert hall; you feel the brass as much as hear it. Birdland lists a 4:30 start, so treat this as an afternoon-into-evening plan in the Theater District rather than a late night.

INKwell Times Sq Harbor Club Grown Folk Fridays Afterwork

The name tells you most of what you need: an after-work Friday gathering aimed at a grown crowd, on a rooftop on the far west side of Midtown. It is a few blocks from the jazz club, so the two could share an evening if you pace yourself.

DAYDREAM | Air Becomes Art – Balloon Museum

This is the family pick of the week, filed under family on our calendar. We have entry slots listed roughly every fifteen minutes from late morning into the late afternoon, so it is easy to fit around a slow start. Art made from air tends to land with kids and adults alike.

The Banksy Museum New York!

Filed under fine art, this one is devoted to the street artist's work and makes an easy second stop if you are already spending the day in lower Manhattan. Several afternoon start times are on our calendar, and earlier slots usually mean quieter rooms.

Pre-Existing Condition

Our one theater pick is a small-house production at Greenwich House Theater in the West Village. Our listing has little beyond the title and the time, so check the production's own page for running time and tickets before you head in.

That is six ways to spend one Friday. The rest of the window is still filling in as venues post their dates, so check our events calendar again before next weekend, especially for anything closer to Newark. If you know of something we should be listing, send it our way.
